Pronunciation: Griff-on
The Griffon is a sturdy toy dog of square proportions with a domed head, undershot jaw, very short nose and lustrous eyes. The Griffon's pout gives him an almost human expression. These little dogs originated from Brussel, Belgium and can be traced back to the early 1880's.
Description: There are two types: Rough-Coated ( harsh, wiry, dense hair) Smooth-Coated (short, straight, glossy hair)
Ears are generally cropped and the tail is docked and carried high, though cropping the ears is optional. Griffons shed little to no hair.
Griffons come in red, mixture of red-brown & black, black & tan and solid black.
Height & Weight: Weight typically runs between 5-12 pounds Height typically runs between 7-8 inches
Temperament: The Griffons are known to be a bit sensitive, to have a huge heart, and to have a strong desire to snuggle and be with his or her master. They have an air of self importance that can be especially charming. Griffons tend to get along well with other animals in the house, such as cats, dogs and ferrets, but can get into trouble because they have no concept of size, and will attempt to boss around dogs much bigger than they are. Having a Griffon means having a true constant companion. They need their favorite person all the time and will not be happy if left outdoors or alone for most of the day. A Griffon will want to follow you about the house, on your errands, and to bed.
Living Conditions: Griffons are great dogs for apartment life and will do ok without a yard.
Exercise: These little dogs are very energetic and active. They pretty much get all the exercise they need throughout the day on their own requiring very little on the owner's part.
Life Expectancy: About 12-16 years
